I was spending lakhs monthly on Gemini, OpenAI and Anthropic. Open-source models hosted on Modal handle most of it — text models with tool support, embedding models, all self-hosted. My tested list.

After spending lags every month, I finally realized there are a lot of open source models which can get everything done which you're paying Gemini, OpenAI or Enthropic for. So, for example, if you are using text-based models, there's a list of all the models which you can host on modal.com for free, by the way, and you can run AI models there which gives amazing response, the tool-based response. Second, you even have embedding models which are open source. Again, you can self-host them. I have been going through a lot of them while building my latest product QEdit.
