YouTube didn't monetise me. That's when I learned rented audience vs owned audience

2:25

Platforms hand you viewers based on engagement, not interest. Email lists and WhatsApp groups are yours. I collect emails from my site now — thousands so far.

When YouTube did not monetize my channel, I realized that the audience you build on these social media platforms is not the audience you own. So your goal should always be to have audience which you own. What is the difference between audience you own versus the audience which you rent? Meaning when you go on a social media platform like Instagram, YouTube, they give you the audience on the basis of the engagement your video gets, not on the basis of the people who are actually interested to follow you. WhatsApp community groups. Those are your own list where you can actually reach out to. So for the last few months, as I have been creating content, I created my website, had an email list pop up there so that I can collect. And I have been able to collect thousands of emails. Now, from morning, like from afternoon, I have been going through a lot of things of how to actually structure this, but I could actually reach out to them much better. So I have considered all of the things. I started with WhatsApp channel. Then I considered Telegram. Then I considered Telegram channel. It's like WhatsApp channel has an issue where WhatsApp channel initially shows create new group. The whole UX of when you join a new channel is up. It's like dumb. I don't like it. I saw Telegram. I was interested in it. But then I was like, OK, Telegram is fine. But what about documenting? So basically what I'm looking for is I need to be able to write a long form of blog about how to do things. Right. So I recently created a video about how you should have a better Google sign in button rather than just direct a sign in with Google button. little documentation. I might share some piece of code. I might share what I have implemented on different websites so people can try it. Now, for that, I need a blog kind of service. I was thinking of Reddit, my own website, and then Substack. These are the things which I have considered. My own website, there is a problem because if I'll be sending emails, I'll be using something like MailerLite, which is again costly. I actually stopped using it. I started using Resend Audience to store the audience rather than using MailerLite because they were charging on a monthly basis. Now, when it comes to Resend, I will have to manage the reputation myself. It'll be a bit more tricky about the design of how the emails will be sent. On the other hand, I'm thinking to consider Substack. There it will be much more of like no code way where I can relax and it can kind of, a lot of big people are using it. So that's a good thing. So I'm considering setting up Substack. I'll be importing all my email list into that and I'm sending email. But the whole conclusion is start building your owned list. Stop renting, start owning.
