Lesson 5.1 — From raw rows to the chart they wanted

Nobody ever asked for rows. They asked for an answer. The chart is what they are actually buying, and it takes about four minutes to add. Three steps. Use QUERY to count up the category column you already built. Insert a chart on that summary. Then one Sheet A I cell to write the takeaway in plain words. One QUERY line does the whole summary. Category, count, sorted biggest first. This is the table your chart sits on. And then the part that gets you rehired. Feed the summary back in and ask what management should do about it. That paragraph is what gets read out in the meeting. Your sheet never even gets opened. Same underlying work, twice the price. A report sells for double what a data file sells for, because one of them is a decision and the other one is homework.…
