Lesson 6.3 — Pricing, scope and the retainer ladder

1:04

Hold your rate, avoid scope creep, and climb from project to retainer.

Transcript preview

This lesson is about holding your price when it gets uncomfortable, and climbing the ladder while you do it. The ladder has four rungs. A small paid sample at two to five thousand. The full project at fifteen to forty. A monthly retainer at around twenty thousand. And then multiple datasets rolled under the same retainer. You climb one rung per conversation, never two. When they say it is too expensive, and they will, never drop the price. Cut the scope instead. I can do two hundred products instead of five hundred at that budget. Same rate per item, smaller invoice. Your rate survives, and it survives for the next client too. And write down what is not included, not just what is. One revision round on the sample, not on the full run. Put that in the quote itself. Almost every freelance horror story is a scope that only existed in somebody's head. And get paid properly. Fifty percent up front from any new client. Full payment before the final file changes hands. Keep the sheet view only until the invoice clears. That is not being difficult, that is just being a business.
